Jessica Chiba is an Assistant Professor at the Shakespeare Institute of the University of Birmingham. Motivated by the belief that works of literature that matter to people can reveal something significant about human existence, her research focuses on the intersection between Shakespeare and philosophy, especially where questions about language overlap with issues surrounding knowledge and existence.
Her further research looks beyond English to consider how the translation of Shakespeare plays a part in intercultural communication in our world today. She has published on adaptation and translation, focusing especially on the question of untranslatability as a philosophical issue that can reveal fundamental cultural assumptions in Shakespeare’s work.
